Porte Saint Paul

Highlight • Other

The Saint Paul Gate was built into the city walls in the 19th century and consists of two arches (entrance/exit), each arch equipped with a drawbridge. It connected the Verdun station, where the conscripts came from, to the city centre and in particular to the Jeanne d'Arc barracks. In the 1920s, the destruction of the city walls, already weakened by the bombardments, was completed.

Only the Saint Paul Gate was spared and was embellished with commemorative columns in honour of the victory of Verdun and the reconstruction of the city.

Plaids Tower - Verdun

Highlight • Other

The complex of buildings that you can see from this point was built in the 14th century and is part of the Great Wall of Verdun. Its shape is horseshoe-shaped and also bears the name Tour du Puty. The name "Plaids" comes from the court sessions that were held there in the Middle Ages. The Puty Canal flows under the Tour des Plaids. It is one of the many canals of the Meuse at Verdun. These canals are a reminder of the time when tanneries for the army represented an important part of Verdun's industrial activity.

The monument is located on the east bank of the Meuse, in front of Japiot Park, next to Porte Chaussée. Built in 1928, it stands on the site of the military butchery destroyed in 1916. The monument is composed of five figures representing the five corps of the army engaged during the battle of 1916: a horseman, an engineer, a territorial , an infantryman and an artilleryman.

Beautiful square with a lot of history: a memorial for the fallen soldiers is right next door, the old city gate with the pretty old town on the other bank of the Meuse

Verdun Memorials and Monuments

Highlight • Historical Site

Verdun, in Lorraine, in the middle of the Maasvlakte, is marked by a heavy historical past, closely linked to the First World War. Battlefield of a terrible battle in 1916, which cost more than 300,000 lives in 10 months, the city commemorates this painful past with a permanent tribute to the soldiers killed at the front.
