St. Antoni Chapel, Am Decke Tönnes

Highlight • Religious Site

The name ceiling Tönnes (Tönnes = Toni = Antonius) comes from a saint figure in a small chapel just below the highest point of the L234 directly to the right of the road.
A plaque at the chapel informs: “The wooden figure of St. Anthony of Egypt standing in this chapel is therefore called 'Tönnes ceiling' because it is larger than life and, before the chapel was built around 1900, stood freely on a high plinth. According to legend, a trading Jew or a farmer from the area built the chapel as a fulfillment of a vow. According to the restorer Brühl, who worked on the sculpture a few years ago on behalf of the parish Effelsberg and replaced missing parts - the left hand with the Bible and the shepherd's staff with the two bells - it was made in the late Middle Ages (15th / 16th century) probably built in Steinfeld Monastery. ... ”

Gothic Town Hall Bad Münstereifel

Highlight • Historical Site

The Gothic town hall represents both urban self-government and the economic importance of the medieval Münstereifel. In 1476 it was first mentioned as the cloth house of the Münstereifel cloth makers. In 1550/51 the building, which had meanwhile been rededicated as the town hall, was expanded to include the right (western) part. The self-confidence of the citizens manifested itself in the tower that was once part of the extension. He had his own tower clock because they didn't want the clock opposite in the collegiate church to dictate the duration of the market.
In 1821 the then dilapidated town hall was sold to a family of brewers for demolition. It used it as a beer and malt store for the brewery bar next to it. In 1904 the city bought the house back. But it was not until 1930 that the building, which had been restored in the meantime, was used again as the town hall.

Historic Old Town of Bad Münstereifel

Highlight • Historical Site

Bad Münstereifel is a historically grown romantic town with picturesque half-timbered houses, a lively pedestrian zone with attractive shops and many lively cafes along the Erft.

The historic center with its narrow streets and alleys can be reached via four historically significant city gates in the four directions. The castle complex towers above the city. From here you can enjoy a wonderful view over Bad Münstereifel.
The City Outlet has been located in the historic old town area since 2014. Here, too, it is worth taking a look or two.

Werther Gate, Bad Münstereifel

Highlight • Monument

The Werther Gate, located in the north of the old town, is the youngest of the four city gates. It was rebuilt after it collapsed during a flood in 1416. On the exterior, above the arched portal, hang the coats of arms of the Duchy of Jülich and the city of Münstereifel. The building now houses the Natural History Museum.
