Langenstein Cave Dwellings

Highlight • Historical Site

If you leave Halberstadt in the direction of Harz, you come across the picturesque village of Langenstein at the gates of the city. Here is a unique testimony to earlier living culture in Germany: the cave dwellings of Langenstein. Numerous dwellings were once carved into the soft sandstone by young farm workers' families. Some dwellings, it is believed, even date from the Germanic settlement period.

Massive doors in the rock face, windows with white curtains and tiny gardens with kitchen herbs are still reminiscent of the life of their former residents. Sometimes it even seems as if a hobbit from a Tolkien novel is about to stumble in the door.

The last troglodyte, as the cave dwellers were called, did not leave its unusual home until 1916. You can still visit the caves on Höhlenstrasse on Schäferberg and on Altenburg.

Brockenstedter Pond

Highlight • Lake

A mill is no longer here - but a beautiful and very peaceful pond. You can just relax and unwind - there is a Sitzgelegeheit on top of that.

The small sandstone caves are no less spectacular than their large counterparts. My dogs never wanted to stop playing between the dark caves.

Meding's Redoubt Trench System

Highlight • Historical Site

The Medingschanze is a trench system in the Halberstadt Hills that was initiated by Captain Werner von Meding in 1916 and built under his direction. In order to present the then new trench warfare on the Western Front to the public and to provide financial support to war veterans and war widows, a trench system was built on public land based on the originals in Flanders, which all civilians could visit for a small entrance fee. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Halberstadt Hills were a very popular local recreation area with numerous restaurants for day trippers.

Built by Hauptmann Meding in 1916 as a trench system. Today you can still recognize the dimensions and run away.
