Sababurg Castle

Highlight • Castle

The Sababurg, formerly Zappenburg, then Zapfenburg and today popularly named after the Brothers Grimm fairy tale Sleeping Beauty Castle, is the ruin of a mountain castle in the legendary Reinhardswald, which extends in the northern Hessian district of Kassel. Sababurg is also a district of the district Beberbeck of Hofgeismar.

The hill castle was built in 1334 as Zappenburg to protect the pilgrims of the nearby pilgrimage site Gottsbüren. From the medieval castle dating from 1490, the hunting lodge Zapfenburg emerged. After 1957 the complex was restored and since 1959 it has been a hotel. Together with Trendelburg and Krukenburg, today's ruins belong to the three best-known castles in the Reinhardswald region, although the latter stands just outside this forest. In the surroundings there are the zoo Sababurg and the forest Sababurg. At the castle, the idea for the board game Sagaland Wikipedia was born

Riding along the Fulda cycle path was a joy - there are plenty of bridges to get to the other side. The Fulda meanders along and there are many cosy places to stop. Highly recommended.
