At the former train station in Oberviechtach there is a historic technical treat - not just for railway enthusiasts. One of the oldest Hanomag locomotives still preserved in the world has found its well-deserved resting place in an architecturally exceptionally successful "glass locomotive shed". The B-coupler, i.e. two axles, was built in the Hanomag works in 1899 under the number 3427. Its design corresponds to the first Bockerln that served on the Nabburg-Oberviechtach-Schönsee railway line from 1904 onwards.

The Nabburg-Oberviechtach route was opened on August 18, 1904, and the last train ran on October 15, 1994. But thanks to entrepreneur Siegfried Rossmann, there are no ruins in Oberviechtach, but a beautiful station building. In 2012, the completion of the exterior renovation was celebrated. Since then, the special feature of the station has been the "Hanomag" locomotive from 1899, which is reminiscent of railway history in a glass locomotive shed.

Oberviechtach

Highlight • Settlement

The starting point is the Planet Sonne directly at the former train station in Oberviechtach. The path then leads along the scenic Bavarian-Bohemian Friendship Path along the planets of our solar system. Via Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune you reach the outer planet of the solar system, Pluto, in 5.9 km. Impressive panels provide information on the respective planet in two languages (German / Czech). oberpfaelzerwald.de/planetenweg

Winklarn Quarry

Highlight • Structure

It is best to drive through the quarry on weekends, public holidays or after work. The workers do not like to see it, especially since there are also blasts from time to time.

Kulzer Stonehenge

Highlight • Monument

The imposing stone structure of Stonehenge in England is well known to everyone. In 1994 these were the triggers for the documentary film of the BR "Stonehenge and the megalithic culture" This was to show how Stonehenge was created and the three blocks of stone were transported, set up and connected. It was not without reason that the town of Kulz in the Upper Palatinate community of Thanstein in the Schwandorf district was chosen. The numerous granite deposits and the surrounding quarries provided the best conditions for the implementation of this project. A total of three blocks of granite rock were blown up and driven to their destination by truck. The granite stones, each weighing over 40 tons, were then erected within two days using pure muscle power to create the more than six-meter-high work of art, which is one of the special attractions of the Upper Palatinate today.

A place worth seeing with the "Upper Palatinate Stonehenge", here you can experience history. In an experiment it should be shown how the famous "Stonehenge in England" came about. The action was accompanied by a BR film team. The three granite stones weighing around 40 tons were erected with pure muscle power within two days and now form this special attraction near Kulz. There are seating groups and a display board with explanations about the project. Great place for a break.

View of Obermurach Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

The ruins of Haus Murach Castle are almost more impressive from a distance than up close, so you should take your time to enjoy this vantage point of the castle and Obermurach.
