Aira Force waterfall is most probably the most famous of the Lake District waterfalls. In this little heaven on earth, Aira Force provides a glimpse of an age gone by, a landscaped park, a woodland paradise, and at its centre a dramatic waterfall along with a charming stone bridge. No wonder the place was such an inspiration to Wordsworth.

Gowbarrow Fell summit

Highlight • Summit

Gowbarrow Fell is a gloriously accessible Wainwright summit on the northern shore of Ullswater. It can be combined with a hike to Aira Force, the famous waterfall that tumbles down a ravine on its south western flanks.

The fell's summit area is dotted with craggy outcrops and rewards with awesome Ullswater views to the south and to the Mell Fells and Blencathra in the north.

Yewcrag protrudes from the south eastern corner of Gowbarrow Fell's flanks above beautiful Ullswater. It position gives it stonking views of the lake and the surrounding fells. The rocky fist of Hallin Fell stares back across the water, whilst Place Fell looks grand. Perhaps the best view is towards the huge bulk of St Sunday Crag, rising intimidatingly beyond Birks.

Ullswater has so many fine viewpoints that it is hard to say which is best. This one is surely hard to beat though. It gives a superb view of St Sunday Crag rising monstrously from the head of the lake. It looks particularly fine after snowfall, looking every inch a grand mountain.
