Monastery staircase at the end of the 17th century, Beilstein/Mosel
Of the 108 most beautiful steps – The construction of the Beilstein monastery staircase at the end of the 17th century
When the Carmelite monks in Beilstein ceremoniously laid the foundation stone for the new building of their monastery on May 23, 1686, significant earthworks must have preceded this.

Carmelite Church of St. Joseph, Beilstein

Highlight • Religious Site

Carmelite Monastery Church of St. Joseph Beilstein
The Carmelite Monastery Church of St. Joseph, which stands enthroned above the picturesque town of Beilstein, remains a spiritual place that breathes the spirit of the Carmelites to this day. The Carmelites, "the Order of the Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel," had developed by the 12th century from a Christian hermit community who emulated their spiritual role model, the prophet Elijah, on the Carmel Mountains in Palestine. Elijah is still considered a theological symbol of steadfastness in times of oppression and turning away from God. From the very beginning, the Carmelites placed particular importance on Marian devotion. The advance of the Muslim Turks in the 13th century forced the Carmelites to emigrate to Europe. They formed a "mendicant order" that, in addition to the humble hermit life, also included pastoral work and academic study. In 1636, the Carmelite Order, along with Burgrave von Metternich, came to Beilstein. In May 1686, the Carmelite Fathers laid the foundation stone of a monastery on the so-called Rammerberg, and on June 10, 1691, the foundation stone for the monastery church.

In 1948, the Carmelite Fathers moved back into the monastery in Beilstein, and in 1950, with the help of the Kolb family from Briedern, they returned the miraculous image of the Black Madonna to the Beilstein monastery church in a ship, in an event solemnly supported by the local population. It had been taken into the care of Trier since 1808. For centuries, people had made pilgrimages with their sorrows and needs to the region's oldest image of the Virgin Mary (12th or 13th century), the "Black Madonna," which the Spanish left to the people of Beilstein after their occupation during the Thirty Years' War. Beilstein was a well-known place of pilgrimage.
