Chester Water Tower

Highlight • Historical Site

Originally called the New Tower, the Water Tower stands at the end of a crenellated retaining wall in an area now known as Tower Gardens. The spur wall connects the Water Tower to Bonewaldesthorne Tower, located at the northwest angle of the main walls.

The lower area where the Water Tower stands was once covered by the River Dee before the river silted up and receded. The Water Tower was built in 1322 by the mason John de Helpeston for the sum of 100 pounds and remains largely unchanged today. The Water Tower's purpose was to guard Chester's port. Now that the river has receded, the "Tower Gardens" area is a pleasant place to relax in fine weather. There is a children's playground and a bowling alley at the Water Tower.

Chester Racecourse (The Roodee)

Highlight • Cycleway

Established in 1539, Chester is the oldest racecourse still in operation in the world. The racecourse has consistently been awarded the Gold Standard Award by the Racehorse Owners Association (ROA) since the award’s inception and was awarded the prestigious title of Large Racecourse of the Year, when the award was launched in 2015 and again in 2018 and 2019.
There is a good cycle path around the racecourse, and when there are no races, you can walk around and take your dog on there.

Old Dee Bridge Weir

Highlight • Bridge

The Old Dee Bridge in Chester, Cheshire, England is the oldest bridge in the city. It crosses the River Dee and carries the road leading to Handbridge from the end of Lower Bridge Street and the Bridgegate. A bridge on this site was first built in Roman times, and the current bridge is largely the result of a major reconstruction in 1387. It is listed on the National Heritage List for England as a Category I listed building, and is a scheduled monument. (Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Dee_Bridge)

River Dee Promenade, Chester

Highlight • Trail

The River Dee flows 68 miles (110 km) through beautiful areas of Wales and the UK, travelling from Snowdonia to the Wirral Peninsula. Its name comes from the Brythonic word dēvā which means "River of the Goddess" or "Holy River."

At this spot, the river winds through the centre of Chester and is a very popular spot for a stroll or cycle ride.
