Bischwind Village

Highlight • Settlement

Biwind is a part of the municipality of Dingolshausen in the Lower Franconian district of Schweinfurt.
The village of Biwind first appeared as "Biscofes-Winiden". The settlement probably goes back to a Slavic foundation, the so-called Wends initially inhabited the village. They were subordinate to the bishop and were therefore called "bishop's turns". Originally there was a castle on the site of today's church, which was inhabited by the ministeriales of the lords of Bischofswinden. Under Emperor Henry VI. became Sigelohus the Younger J. († 1195) von Bischofswinden Chancellor.

In 1762, Biwind was hit by a cattle plague. During this catastrophe, the villagers accepted St. Wendelin as their local patron. In 1806 the population suffered under the French. During the coalition wars, Napoleonic horsemen were billeted in the village, the population protested and violent clashes broke out. Today Biwind is part of the Dingolshausen community.

The soldier Johann Georg Mitnacht is said to have experienced help in times of dire need 300 years ago when he marched with Prince Eugene's army against the Turks and was taken prisoner. Filled with great gratitude after his fortunate escape, he built the pilgrimage chapel "Maria Hilf." The first chapel, measuring approximately two by two meters, was built by Johann Georg Mitnacht in 1708. By the middle of the 19th century, however, it had become so dilapidated that it was demolished in 1847 and rebuilt in 1850. The new building soon proved to be dilapidated and too small, so a larger one was constructed. The new chapel was consecrated on September 12, 1875.
