From 1919 to 1952 Waldemar Bonsels lived and worked in Ambach on the quiet eastern shore of Lake Starnberg, where he also wanted to be buried. The villa, built in 1885/86 with its gate that can be seen from afar, is now a listed building.
The colorful, folkloric gate at the driveway still reminds of Bonsel's cosmopolitanism and wanderlust, although it was not built especially for him. The Hungarian director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Julius v. Benczur, the previous owner of the property, set a striking symbol in the landscape with the “Székler Gate”.

Villa Waldemar Bonsels

Highlight • Historical Site

The villa is characterized by a mixture of late classicist and at the same time rural architectural forms. The special location of the historic property has always been characterized by the scenic charm of Lake Starnberg with a view of the mountains. The villa rises slightly higher on the slope in the middle of meadows and old trees behind the well-known so-called “Hungarian Gate”. The Hungarian-born director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich Gyula (Julius) v. Benczúr built the “Székler Gate” in honor of his wife in 1894.

In 1919 the villa came into the possession of the famous writer Waldemar Bonsels, who created important works here such as the story “Mario and the Animals” and others. However, his most famous work, “Maya the Bee and Her Adventures,” was written in 1912, when Bonsels was still living in Munich Oberschleißheim. Waldemar Bonsels lived and worked in Ambach on the eastern shore of Lake Starnberg until his death in 1952. In the 1960s, a two-story extension was built on the west side, which, by today's standards, was not very suitable for the villa as a monument.

Since 1977, the Waldemar Bonsels Foundation has managed Waldemar Bonsel's literary legacy and, as the owner, also the villa in Ambach. This is a listed building and is listed under the entry D-1-73-137-16 at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation.
