Description
If you're looking for an easy, rewarding hike with incredible Bay Area views, The Dish loop from Ladera is definitely worth your time. This 2.4-mile (3.8 km) hiking route is rated easy, with a gentle 292 feet (89 metres) of climbing, and takes just over an hour to complete. It's perfect for a quick, scenic workout or a leisurely stroll with panoramic payoffs, making it one of the more accessible hiking trails in the area.
What to expect on The Dish loop from Ladera
What makes this route special is the constant visual reward. The trail is entirely paved and wide, making for comfortable walking as it gently rises and falls through the grassy hills. You'll quickly be treated to expansive panoramic views, stretching across the Stanford University campus, past Hoover Tower, and out to the Palo Alto and South Bay area. On clear days, you can even spot the East Bay hills and the San Francisco skyline. The star of the show, of course, is the iconic 150-foot Stanford Dish radio telescope, which you'll circumnavigate. It's an easy path, but the gentle climbs offer a pleasant workout, making it suitable for almost anyone looking for a scenic stroll or a quick run.
Planning your visit
The Dish loop is a very popular trail, especially on weekends, so arriving early is always a good idea for parking. The area is open from sunrise to sunset, with hours varying seasonally, so plan your visit accordingly. Remember that bicycles and dogs are not permitted on the trail. Since much of the path is exposed, sun protection is highly recommended, especially during warmer months.
