While traveling along the former embankment towards the highest pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Lithuania, tourists are greeted by a surprise – two carriages of the former train “M 23”. In one there is a cozy café with a special dessert from the interwar Alytus resort, which even ladies from Kaunas came to taste. In the other there is a museum of the history of the former Alytus region railway.

Lelijos Žiedas Sculpture

Highlight • Monument

The old sculpture "Lily Flower", authored by sculptor Vladas Kančiauskas, was erected in Alytus in 1981, commemorating the 400th anniversary of the city of Alytus. The sculpture, which adorned the city for several decades, was dismantled when the construction of a bicycle and pedestrian bridge began. Sculptor V. Kančiauskas prepared a new project and presented a slightly different "Lily Flower" sculpture - a hollow, "lighter" one, matching the bridge structures, but visually repeating the old sculpture.

This residence in Alytus owes its name to the figures of small lions that adorn its steps. The house was built after a devastating fire in the city in 1911; its builder was Mordechai Bokshitzky, whose initials can be seen on the facade of the house along with the date of construction. In the years between the two world wars, the lawyer Mendel Bokshitzky lived in the house and his son Saadia Bahat, who later became a well-known Israeli artist, was born here. During World War II, Bokshitzky and his family ended up in the Vilnius ghetto. Lithuanians saved his daughter Lily's life, and his son Saadia also managed to escape. In the years 1944-1953 fighters for Lithuanian independence were imprisoned and tortured in this house.
Next to the house are four stumbling blocks (brass plates embedded in streets and sidewalks with the names and dates of victims of Nazi persecution) commemorating Mendel Bokshitzky, his wife Sheyna, his son Saadia Bahat and his daughter Lily Winterfeld. The building is included in the Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Lithuania (Translated from English by the on-site information board).
