The Stork Capital of Poland

Highlight • Natural

There is probably no more positive symbol in Polish tradition than the white stork. It heralds the arrival of a new season, the beginning of spring, a period of blessings, warmth, and abundance. After all, it was and sometimes still is associated with bringing children, who were supposedly found in cabbage fields.

The most stork-friendly place in Poland is Żywkowo. A village located in Barcia, right on the border with Russia. In the former Scheweken, and currently Żywkowo, after World War II, the place of German residents was taken by Ukrainian families resettled here as part of the Vistula Action.

Their descendants still live in the village today, but their numbers have decreased significantly.

And this is the great phenomenon of the place, because with about 20 residents, Żywkowo is visited by about 45 stork pairs during the season.

Gasworks Museum

Highlight • Historical Site

The Museum of Gas Industry of Warmia and Mazury was established in 1994 and is located in the historic building of the Gasworks in Górowo Iławeckie.
On May 7, 1907, Landsberg's magistrate decided to build a coal-fired gas plant for the city's needs.
The construction was entrusted to the company Karl Frande from Bremen. It is planned to build a single and triple furnace furnace, a desulphurization plant, an appendix, a gas tank with a capacity of 700 m³, an administration building and an 8 km long gas distribution network. It was assumed that daily gas production would amount to 500 m³.
It was built on the site of the so-called Plague Mountain (formerly the hill was outside the city walls). The Plague Mountain was the burial place of several hundred victims of the plague epidemic that hit the city in 1710. A municipal water tower was also built on the Plague Mountain.
The gas in the municipal gas plant was made of coal. Coal was delivered from the Bulfen mine. In the first years, the gas plant supplied street lighting. Later, private gas consumers were also connected to the network. The plant was opened on September 13, 1908.
In the years 1908-1910, the gas plant was managed by the Central Office in Bremen.

Very nice accommodation. It looks a bit unassuming from the outside, but it's highly recommended.
