Niederdonker Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

The Niederdonker Chapel is a beautiful, idyllic place. According to popular belief, it was once a hermit's cell. It is mentioned in documents from the 17th century as the Chapel of the "Sorrowful Mother", "Mary in Distress" or "Pieper's Chapel" - where this last name comes from is still a mystery today. The destination of many pilgrims is a Pietá from the 19th century, a depiction of Mary with her dead son. It replaces an older figure whose origin and whereabouts are unknown. During the pilgrimage week in September, the Ganden image is carried on the Stations of the Cross around the Dyckhof.
In addition to the Pieta and the motif windows of the chapel, the triptych "Lactatio of Saint Bernard" from 1538 is particularly worth admiring. (Source: smhg.de)

Maria in der Not Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

The pilgrimage and mercy chapel "Maria in der Not" has chosen a modest place. Far too seldom does someone stray here and be surprised by the idyll of this beautiful spot in the Niederdonk district of Meerbusch-Büderich. However, those who have found their way here are happy to return. "There is probably not an hour of the day when you will find the chapel empty," says Pastor Michael Berning. “People come here at any time of the day. At Mass on Wednesday mornings you have to come early to get a seat.”

With the renovation, the chapel appears to be following a ritual. In the past it has often been rebuilt, rebuilt or expanded. There are various stories about its origin. According to the vernacular, it was once a hermitage. Another source dates its construction to the year 1542, when it is said to have been built by the owner of the nearby Dyckhof. It is mentioned in documents from the 17th century as a chapel to the "Painful Mother", "Maria in der Not" or "Piepers Kapellchen" - where this last name came from is still a mystery to this day. It is no mystery, however, why the chapel forms the actual heart of Büderich, as Cardinal Meisner already confirmed. Not only does it connect the two churches of St. Mauritius and Heilig Geist, it also connects locals with visitors, strangers with residents. This cordial character offers everyone the start of a day of relaxation, a "wellness day" for the soul.

Gut Dyckhof

Highlight • Castle

The Dyckhof, also called Gut, Haus, Schloss or Burg Dyckhof, is an estate surrounded by a moat in Niederdonk, part of the town of Büderich, which today belongs to Meerbusch.

Formerly built as a simple moated castle, the main house was converted into a representative mansion in the baroque style in the 17th century (completed in 1666). The elaborate roof hood of the tower, which is unique of its kind in the Rhineland, is particularly striking.

Dyckhof Manor

Highlight • Castle

The Dyckhof, first mentioned in 1393, is a castle complex surrounded by moats. In 1666 the tower was given its lively baroque dome, which is unique in the area. From the late 15th century until 1699 the Dyckhof was the seat of the Lords of Norprath.

Another small early round of the X2. A bit loud, as it is in the direct flight path of Düsseldorf Airport.

Today we took advantage of the nice weather again to go for a walk around Meerbusch Büderich. From the Hülsenbuschweg car park we passed Bürgerwäldchen 5 in the direction of Gut Dyckhof. There we stopped next door at the Samyju coffee roastery and enjoyed the sun again on the beautiful outdoor terrace. The delicious cakes and of course the coffee …
