Memorial Artwork – Painter Tony Van Os

Highlight • Monument

Visual Arts - Painter Tony Van Os °1886 / +1945

Franciscus Antonius Aloysius (Tony) Van Os (Antwerp, June 21, 1886 - Temse, September 5, 1945) was a Belgian painter, draftsman, and illustrator.

But why is there a memorial for Tony here?

During the repression after World War II, he was arrested and placed in the internment camp in Lokeren, where he contracted a spinal cord injury. He died shortly thereafter. He was married and had three children. The family lived abroad and then in Temse, while his studio ('t Jordaantje) was located in Weert. In 1970, a street there, the Tony van Oslaan, was named after him. A monument in his honor, the work of Henri Lannoye, stands on a small square in front of the lock house at the Sas van Weert. Works by Van Os can be seen in the Temse town hall, the Church of Our Lady, and the Sacred Heart Church in Temse, among other places.

Spacious parking lot.
Ideal for a walk or bike ride to discover the Old Scheldt Arm. On location there is also a bit of history about water traffic in times gone by. The old lock is a witness to this.

Buitenland hamlet

Highlight • Settlement

Not far from home and yet experience a foreign feeling.
Nice special houses and only one street in Buitenland create a cozy atmosphere.
On sunny days it can be quite busy here. Parking is possible at the dike. Please note, parking spaces are limited. If all places are occupied, you can continue to the Mobilhome parking a little further away.

Sint-Jacobstoren

Highlight • Monument

Remnant of the Oud-Antwerp exhibition of 1894, re-erected here in 1898. Neo-traditional, octagonal pagadder tower, built of brick and natural stone under a slate spire; connected by a stepped and cemented pointed arch (4 steps and diagonal top piece with crowning lion) to a small round tower, also cemented. The lion carries a coat of arms with the year 1898 (re-erected) and the initials VMV (Victor Merckx-Verellen). The rural house with vague neo-traditional reminiscences, which is built against the whole, was built as a "country house" on the site of an old barn, based on a design by architect J. Goeyvaerts from 1927.

Kleine Kragewiel

Highlight • Lake

The Kleine Kragewiel, which is located just behind the dike, was created during a dike breach in 1552. A persistent storm made a breach in the Spierenbroek. This breach flooded the underlying polders from Branst to Eikevliet. For example, you can still find several 'wheels' in the landscape of Bornem.
According to legend, the storm died down after the procession with a statue of the Virgin Mary and the breach could only be closed after 5 years. The rising water had free play in the landscape all those years. The large water features 'fish ponds' in the spacious surroundings of Bornem are still silent witnesses of dike breaks.
Perhaps that's why the towpath attracts so many 'cycling' tourists…
At the Kleine Kragewiel there is a picnic bench that invites you to linger.
Swimming is prohibited. Enjoy life on and around the water.
