Canterbury Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

Canterbury Cathedral is the most famous Christian structure in England. Founded in 597, the cathedral was rebuilt between 1070 and 1077 and then largely rebuilt again in the Gothic style following a fire in 1174. The cathedral is both a holy place and part of a World Heritage Site and is the most popular tourist attraction in the city. For opening times and more information, visit: canterbury-cathedral.org.

Canterbury Synagogue

Highlight • Other

The earliest mention of a Jewish community in Canterbury dates back to 1160. It is known that the community was wealthy, traded in corn (grain) and wool, and also ran a bank. Despite pogroms in 1261 and 1264, the community thrived until the Edict of Expulsion in 1290. This community is commemorated by the street name Jewry Lane. The foundation stone for this synagogue - the best example of the neo-Egyptian style - was laid in September 1847 by Sir Moses Montefiore. Montefiore, the pioneer of Zionism, who had twenty houses built outside the Old City in Jerusalem in 1857 as Mishkenot Sha'ananim - Peaceful Abode - and an eighteen-meter-high windmill. Not the only arch to Jerusalem.

In the synagogue you can clearly see the two distinctive pillars that stand for Jakim and Boaz, as it says in the first book of Kings: 'He erected the pillars in the corridor of the hall, he erected the right pillar, he called its name Jakin : He strengthened it..., he raised the left pillar, he called its name Boaz: ...in defiance!' That may not mean that much to you; Even scientists who delve deeply into the questions of what these two pillars and their names stand for are ultimately unsure of their meaning. For me, a wonderful bracket for a journey that may extend further.
