Hope Bowdler Hill summit cairn

Highlight • Viewpoint

As you wander along the ridge of Hope Bowlder Hill, the panoramic view over Shropshire is absolutely spellbinding and lasts for a mile or so. When the sun begins to set, Caer Caradoc is bathed in a romantic golden light; illuminating its distinctive shape and ancient hill fort spectacularly.

Carding Mill Valley

Highlight • Gorge

Carding Mill Valley is a stunning valley that runs north-west out of the charming village of Church Stretton. It is the gateway to a plethora of gentle walks, hikes, and bike rides that are available in the Long Mynd area. The Ashbrooke River runs through the centre of this stunning valley, and located in its upper reaches is Lightspout Waterfall. The valley is bordered by the steep but moderate hills of Bodbury Hill and Haddon Hill to the north and Burway Hill and Cow Ridge to the south. There is a National Trust car park, information centre, and cafe at the start of the valley, but get there early, especially on summer weekends and bank holidays, as this is a very popular area.

Lightspout Waterfall

Highlight • Waterfall

Rather than following the main route up to the top of the Long Mynd, you can take a left fork up Lightspout Hollow, a narrow, steep-sided valley leading up to Lightspout Waterfall. It's a fun, rocky ascent through the hollow and the waterfall itself is very impressive.

Long Mynd Ridge

Highlight • Natural Monument

This glorious heather ridge stretches for 7 miles (11 km) and is the most beloved of all the Shropshire Hills. There are several small yet deep valleys cut into the ridge and the most popular of these is Carding Mill Valley, which is managed by the National Trust. The ancient road known as the Portway is now a wide stony track that runs along the ridge’s crest and affords spectacular views over the landscape.

Pole Bank Summit and Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

The top of Long Mynd is a flat plateau and, as such, there is not a distinct summit. However, Pole Bank is the highest point on the ridge and is marked accordingly. The views from this spot are absolutely terrific, especially west into Wales. On a clear day, you can see for miles.

Ragleth Hill

Highlight • Summit

Not the tallest hill in the area. It’s really easy to get to from Church Stretton, it’s not far from the train station. It has good views all around. The assent is still a work out, just not as much as other hills in the area.
