Look out for the plaque at Church’s hardware shop in North Street. Whilst pursuing royalist troops following their defeat at Bovey Tracey, General Fairfax stayed the night at the Mermaid Inn which is now Church’s.

This is SUCH an amazing place with exceptional lunches, cakes and coffee. There's lots of seating inside, a garden out back and they're happy for bikes to be brought in and leant against the walls. There were about 9 bikes in there when I went, including mine.

They serve plant based, often locally sourced food with a sustainable ethos.
