Plas Brondanw Gardens

Highlight • Viewpoint

Sir Clough created a unique and distinctive garden landscape, with magnificent views and perspectives. The gardens are laid out like rooms. Stone walls, topiary, ponds, fountains and tree-lined avenues lead the eye to the dramatic landscape beyond the garden.
Plas Brondanw is not a garden full of colorful flowers or lush herbaceous borders, but rather one based on formal structures and landscaped views of the surrounding mountains. Although more color is seen in summer, the atmosphere of the garden does not change throughout the seasons. The structure of the hedges, the topiary and tree shapes (there is a very impressive Quercus Ilex that is over 200 years old), the architecture and the "borrowed" views of the surrounding landscape are the features that make this garden special. The flowers are “just” decoration.

Cnicht

Highlight • Natural Monument

The small village of Croesor is perhaps most renowned for the striking pyramidal peak that rises above it. This is Cnicht, a mountain that's so dramatic in its appearance that it is often cited as being 'the Welsh Matterhorn'. With historic ties to the slate industry, Croesor's surroundings still bear many of the hallmarks of this once thriving trade.

I bet you cursed a little on the way up here. It's really steep and it's off-road. And then you come across this gate. Open it and be amazed. The view alone was worth all the effort! Then the descent awaits you. It's technical and challenging but it's just fun! Just keep in mind that you're off-road. Ride carefully and remember that in case of a technical issue you probably don't have a phone joker, because the mobile network is not available up here.

Tan y Bwlch railway station is a scenic stop on the Ffestiniog Railway, a heritage narrow-gauge line. Leading through a landscape of foothills, mountains, forests and llyns, it is a spellbinding journey to undertake. Once you step out of the station, some fabulous walking and exceptional wildlife awaits you, too. Founded in 1832, the Ffestiniog Railway is the oldest railway company that survives today.
