Fort bij Uithoorn (Defence Line of Amsterdam)

Highlight • Historical Site

Fort bij Uithoorn, also known as Fort Amstelhoek, is striking because of the two buildings with lifting turret guns that are connected to the fort via a corridor. Original elements such as wooden partitions and a telegraph room have been preserved. Built in 1911, the fort defended strategic points along the Amstel and a railway.

Today the fort is under development but open for tours and meetings by appointment.

The Vrouwenakker Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

This striking bridge over the Amstel River, the Vrouwenakker Bridge, was built in 2008. Its shape is quite remarkable; the top of the bridge suspiciously resembles the limbs of a praying mantis. The bridge connects the village of De Kwakel with the hamlet of Vrouwenakker.

Towpath Along the Drecht

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Highly recommended for those you like to cycle with sheep😉. Lovely little (and I mean little) path along the canal. Nice views etc., but the path is very narrow (in places 1/2 meter only), in poor shape and (see above) full of sheep 🐑 and their droppings.
For those who want to be a little less ‘close to nature’: cross over at the lock (slot in Dutch) where the path turns from the Drecht towards the Amstel-Drecht canal and take the ‘Niewveens Jaagspad.

Zijdelmeer

Highlight • Lake

The Zijdelmeer is one of the oldest peat waters in Dutch low peat. It used to be more connected to the Amstel. The lake is part of the Uithoorn nature reserve.

If you have time, you can take an audio tour around the lake, which takes you past 17 places and provides you with information about the area.
