Beautiful loop through the forest up to summit Skirrid Fawr.

Skirrid Ridge (Ysgyryd Fawr)

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The first part of the walk is pretty steep going through the forest . When coming off the ridge there is an easier path to your left hand side as descending back down from the ridge is steep .

Skirrid Fawr summit

Highlight • Climb

Skirrid Fawr is an iconic little mountain on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Just across the valley from the Sugar Loaf and the Blorenge. All in all they make a classic local Three Peaks challenge. Don't be fooled by Skirrid's small stature, it will give you a good stiff climb from any direction.

Beacons Way Descent at Skirrid Fawr

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This is the steep path down (or up) the northeast face of Skirrid Fawr. It's fun to run down if you have grippy shoes, but cambered and slippery if you don't! It's a tough but short ascent if you're running up.

The Beacons Way is a 98-mile (158 km) long distance trail running east to west across the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park between Abergavenny and Llangadog.

Skirrid Fawr is the first summit if you run the Beacons Way from Abergavenny. The trail heads up the long ridgeline to the summit and then cuts back on itself before descending this path.

Barns of Llanvihangel Court

Highlight • Structure

The Tudor mansion itself cannot be seen from the road. The barns, which are impressive in themselves, are.
The domain is only publicly accessible twice for two weeks per year. For 2023, only August 16-29 remains. Then there are guided tours at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Entrance fee: £7 (or £5 for those with a discount); only cash payments possible.

The history of this church dates back to the end of the 10th century.
The building is therefore registered for its historical value and medieval elements still preserved to this day.
The church is said to have been built as a successor to a small St Michael's Chapel at the top of Skirrid Fawr, a few miles south.

However old the church may be, the roof of the nave is very recent. It collapsed several times over the centuries. The last time in 1974. It was only completely reconstructed in 2000.

The Skirrid Inn

Highlight • Pub

Possibly one of the oldest Inns in the United Kingdom.
The current building dates from the second half of the 17th century, but some claim that there may have been an inn before that, on the pilgrimage route to Llanthony Priory, but no evidence of this has been found.

An equally unconfirmed story is that the first floor of the inn once served as a court. The wear in the beam above the stairs is said to have been caused by ropes from which convicts were hung. Legends speak of 180 hanged people in this inn.

The current operators like to refer to that history in the interior. Whether it's true or not doesn't matter: it's a pleasant place with a fairly wide menu.
