Queensberry Bridge and Footbridge over the River Avon

Highlight • Viewpoint

Queensberry Bridge is a stunning stone span crossing the River Avon on the outskirts of Amesbury. It's a Grade II-listed structure and was built in 1775 with limestone ashlar and elm planks. It's used as a road bridge and has a neighbouring footbridge for pedestrians which offers an unbeatable view of the stone span.

From either bridge you can admire the river, the weeping willows and the vibrant green surroundings.

Normanton Down Barrows

Highlight • Viewpoint

On the crest of this downland ridge is a Neolithic long barrow and around 40 Bronze Age round barrows, ancient burial grounds dating back to between 2600 and 1600 BC. Visible from Stonehenge around half a mile (0.6 km) to the north, Normanton Down Barrows have long been the subject of archaeological digs. Today they're a scheduled monument and part of the Avebury and Stonehenge World Heritage Site, so digs are strictly controlled.

This trail takes you right past Stonehenge and is utterly breathtaking. From this spot, you get almost as close to the Neolithic monument as paying guests do. Stonehenge is a World Heritage Site and is one of the most recognisable prehistoric monuments in the world. Getting so close to the stones is an unforgettable experience.

This stretch of downland is particularly notable for its tumuli (ancient burial mounds) at Old King Barrows and New King Barrows. It's just a short walk from the town of Amesbury and the famous Stonehenge. There are around a dozen beautiful yew trees to see here, as well as oak, ash, hazel and larch.

Cuckoo Stone

Highlight • Monument

Like the larger megaliths that make up the outer ring of Stonehenge, the Cuckoo Stone is a sarsen stone and was once a standing stone. It has since fallen but is still a familiar landmark and is part of the wider Stonehenge Landscape. It's believed that the Cuckoo Stone was the ceremonial centrepiece for several burials around 2000 BC.

Woodhenge

Highlight • Monument

Lying within the Stonehenge World Heritage Site, Woodhenge is a Neolithic Class II henge and timber circle monument. It wasn't discovered until 1926 when a pilot took an aerial photo of the area. The monument was probably built around 2300 BC as a large burial mound.

The site is managed by English Heritage and free to visit. You can visit anytime during daylight hours. More information: english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/woodhenge
