Trzaska-Zakrzewski Family Mausoleum

Highlight • Historical Site

Forest grave in the corridor "Behind the Altburg". It belongs to the builder of the Altburg, which was built in 1911-19. Leo Philippus Constantinus Lucas Zakrzewski was a Neuwieder bank director and came from a Polish noble family.

Behind the Altburg, in the middle of the forest and directly on the Eifelsteig is a small cemetery, the family tomb of the Trzaska-Zakrzewski family. A mighty stone slab covers the crypt, adorned with the Polish aristocratic coat of arms Trzaska. However, there are only the builders of the new Altburg, Leo Philipp Constantin Lucas Zakrzewski, and his wife Wilhelmine, who died at the age of 81 on 5 April 1959 at 02:15 clock in the Altburg. The Latin inscription on that forest grave records the entire family of the castle owner, but does not mention Mrs. Wilhelmine Trzaska-Zakrzewski, nee Krey.

Epitaph (in brackets the translation):
Sepulcrum (grave) Gentum (family) TRZASKA ZAKRZEWSKI Lucas ZAKRZEWSKI natus est A.D. Hoher List Observatory

Highlight • Monument

Previously, this was the observatory of the University of Bonn, today the "Astronomical Association Vulkaneifel am Hohen List" (AVV) takes care of the area, an association of amateur astronomers and professors emeritus. More precisely, the association takes care of one of the telescopes. The other five telescopic cupolas may not be entered, but are also not used, which has to do with a civic coup, in which the University of Bonn, two federal states, preservationists and various authorities are involved. The posse can be told during a visit to the observatory - or with the mirror telescope in the sun look (with filter of course). Unfortunately, a visit is only possible on Wednesdays at 11 clock, but possibly also by appointment. Contact via hoher-list.de For all who miss this, we interviewed two scientists at the observatory: The astronomy professor Ulrich Klein explains the history of the universe in five minutes: soundcloud.com / zeitwissen / ulrich-klein-urknall Astrophysicist Norbert Junkes reports on 4.5 billion year old water found in the Eifel: soundcloud.com/zeitwissen/wasser-eifel-junkes (Internet connection required)

Dronke Tower on the Mäuseberg

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the parking lot between the Weinfelder Maar and the Schalkenmehrener Maar, a path climbs uphill to the Dronketurm on äumeberg. There you have a panoramic view that extends as far as the Hunsrück when the weather is good. You can also see all three maars from here – Schalkenmehrener, Gemündener and Weinfelder Maar. Reason enough to take a short break here.

View of the Gemünden maar

Highlight • Lake

This maar is not only very beautiful and accessible via the MaareGlück-Rundweg, but there is also a forest café and a swimming pool here. You can swim in the maar and rent boats, and the sunbathing lawn is on the sunny side. However, you have to watch out for ticks. Those who want to can jump into the maar from a seven-and-a-half-meter high diving tower.
