Lindwurm Fountain, New Square (Neuer Platz), Klagenfurt

Highlight • Monument

The rectangular shaped Neue Platz is the central city square of Klagenfurt, in the middle of which stands the Lindwurm as the city's landmark and heraldic animal. The square was created in the second half of the 16th century, when the estates had their new Renaissance city built south of the medieval one. They also commissioned the Lindwurm monument, which commemorates the beginnings of the city according to the founding legend: Ford of the “Klagen” = Klagenfurt.
In 1593, the 124 hundredweight work made of chlorite slate is said to have been dragged from nearby Kreuzbergl to Neuer Platz by 300 young men dressed in white. In 1636 the sculpture was expanded into a lindworm fountain with a fountain trough, club-wielding Hercules and a Renaissance lattice. The well once supplied the city with drinking and fire-fighting water.

For the 2008 European Football Championship, the square was redesigned according to the plans of the architect Boris Podrecca. Dark granite stone slabs form the elegant “carpet” for the lindworm fountain.

The Lindwurm Fountain on Neuer Platz is Klagenfurt's most famous landmark. The chlorite slate figure was created at the end of the 16th century and commemorates the legend of the defeated Lindwurm. The fountain basin, wrought iron railing, and Hercules statue were added later. The fountain has been restored and relocated several times, most recently in 1972. Today, it stands as a symbol of history, myth, and identity in the heart of the city.

St. Egid Parish Tower, Klagenfurt

Highlight • Religious Site

The city's main parish church of St. Egid is not only located in the centre of the state capital Klagenfurt in the narrow sense of the word, as it is probably the oldest church in the city, its history is also closely interwoven with the fate of Klagenfurt since the High Middle Ages.

Trinity Column Klagenfurt

Highlight • Monument

The Holy Trinity Column is a plague column in the city of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. It was commissioned by the provincial states of Carinthia and erected from the year 1680 onwards in the square in front of the Church of the Holy Spirit. In 1965, the votive monument was moved to its current location in the Alter Platz.

The column, erected in 1680/81, initially consisted of wood and stood on the Heiligengeistplatz. The hospital and the oldest cemetery in the city were located there. The reason for erecting the monument was the thanks of the provincial states and the population of Carinthia for sparing the region from the plague. Its spread was primarily prevented by strict isolation of the city and the introduction of hygiene measures. After the siege and subsequent liberation of Vienna from the Turks (1683), it was replaced by a stone version by 1689, which took on the character of a victory column. At its base, it commemorates the plague period, and it is crowned by the defeated crescent moon, above which stands the Christian cross.

The representative building with a horseshoe-shaped floor plan and steep gable roof was built between 1574 and 1590; Remains of a previous building (armoury) can still be seen in the north wing. The west and south facades were designed around 1730. In the open inner courtyard there is a two-story arcade and two slender towers with onion helmets. There are paintings by J. F. Fromiller in the large and small coat of arms hall.

The church, which appears sober from the outside, has a mighty six-story porch tower. It was built by Protestants from 1580 onwards, but was handed over to the Jesuits in 1604. Most of the furnishings date from the time after a major fire in 1723.
