Cemetery Church of St. Sebastian

Highlight • Religious Site

Cemetery church of St. Sebastian

There is no reliable data about the founding and origins of the church. The architectural forms refer to the last quarter of the 16th century.
Late Gothic hall church facing east with a retracted choir, five two-lane tracery windows in the choir. There is a double-winged entrance portal on the west side. To the right of the main portal there is a wall niche with the figure of the Sorrowful Mother of God (plaster cast based on an original from the 18th century). The choir is vaulted with cross ribs, the nave has a flat roof. On the northern wall of the nave there is a floor-to-ceiling St. Christopher fresco depicting the donor family, dated 1507. The saint's head was probably destroyed by Calvinist iconoclasts and a hint of additions were made after the fresco was uncovered in 1954.
The main altar with a double-story base and a round-arched altarpiece framed by two columns. The altarpiece shows “The Martyrdom of St. Sebastian.” In front of it is a three-part tabernacle with a display niche and two gilded decorative vases, which are attributed to the Bruck carpenter Johann Michael Luybl.
The left side altar, which was created in the 1950s based on Upper Palatinate acanthus altars, shows an approx. 30 cm high colored limestone figure of the Mother of God with the child Jesus sitting on her lap. It first appeared in a document in 1811, when the figure is said to have miraculously grown out of the church wall. It was later moved inside the church at the instigation of the Wetterfeld court. The news of the miraculous Mother of God of St. Sebastian spread quickly among the population in the surrounding area and led to a large number of pilgrims, especially those with eye problems.
