St. Anthony’s Spring

Highlight • Religious Site

In 1763, a column bearing the image of St. Anthony of Padua stood above the source of the spring. Three years later, the first small chapel was built on the site. The first mention of the spring, "pey dem heyligen prunn," dates back to the 15th century.
In the 17th century, the spring was still called "our dear women's fountain," and it wasn't until the 18th century that water, with "Antonius," became a men's affair. The chapel was repeatedly rebuilt or renovated, most recently in 1980 as an octagonal exposed concrete structure with a dome.
The water is praised as completely germ-free and is especially recommended for families with children, who can experience water in all its facets in a floodplain landscape: as a healing, lively spring, a babbling brook, a clear, almost stagnant pond, or a muddy swamp. Filling the water into the concrete trough is easy; bottles fill instantly.
The artesian spring is said to originate from a 200-meter-deep fissure. During the chapel's last renovation, the spring casing was also replaced, and a pumping station was installed to feed the water into the public water supply when needed. The water that can be drawn from the chapel's exterior wall also flows through the pump when it's in operation (mostly in summer).
