Isle Castle

Highlight • Castle

This castle, built in the 16th century, is today nothing more than a ruin following a major flooding of the Loire. Composed of stone and brick, the ruins are impressive by the height of the towers and remaining walls.

Old railway bridge

Highlight • Bridge

This railway viaduct was built between 1877 and 1880. Since 2011, no more rail traffic uses the bridge. Transformation work began in 2019 and, since May 2020, the bridge has been dedicated to bicycles and pedestrians.

Thanks to the work, cyclists can cross the Loire between Saint-Père-sur-Loire and Sully-sur-Loire in complete safety. Take your time to appreciate the magnificent views of the Château de Sully and the Loire!

Very nice tour, mostly on the dam. The destination of Orleans has a bit of dolce vita and I like it so much that we take a day off to discover all the nice corners.

Day 16: from Gien to Orleans - on the EV6

The day started well - it was no longer cold and at 9:30 it was already 16 degrees.
Croissant and baguette at the boulangerie around the corner and then a few meters further to the Le Balto bar for our coffee.

Day 21 of my cycling trip from Berlin to Nantes – from Gien to Orléans

Today I was able to wake up in a real bed again – my small accommodation in Gien was considerably warmer and drier than the tent. After breakfast, I crossed the Loire to the other side of the river. From there, the cycle path led …

After my detour home by train. Handlebar mount defective because Flyer had installed a fork for an M Velo and so you could only attach my handlebars to 3mm instead of 3cm on the XL Velo. I was just lucky that this didn't happen while driving. Everything patched up and back on the tour by train. 8 days lost, but …

I wanted to go to Blois but late departure because of the weather, after a week of boat on the Nivernais and Latéral à la Loire canal 😊

I will still have Orléans - Blois to finish the Loire by bike.

Everything went perfectly today. A beautiful route, partly on small country roads and villages, and partly on the Loire Dam. The weather was great, and we had a tailwind several times. We reached the campsite in Orleans-Olivet by 3:30 p.m.

The Briare Canal Bridge, the Chateau de Sully-sur-Loire.

Cornfields, too...

Finally, a few magnificent meanders, and we arrive in Orléans via Ile Charlemagne.

And Orléans Cathedral, of course!

Without knowing it, we are still enjoying the relative freshness, but the heat wave is already on the way.

September holidays = new bikepacking adventure.
I decide to head south towards Rocamadour, following official cycle routes, which I adapt as I go.
Leaving Paris, due south, towards Orléans.
The Loire from Orléans to Marseilles-lès-Aubigny.
Berry and the canal of the same name.
La Vagabonde from Montluçon to Rocamadour, via the Plateau de Millevaches and the Dordogne Valley.
Initially I …
