Ducal Vineyard below Neuenburg Castle

Highlight • Structure

Museum & Exhibitions
High above the wine-growing town of Freyburg lies Neuenburg, the sister castle of Wartburg, founded around 1090 by the Thuringian Count Ludwig the Springer. The first mighty complex was built by 1150. The rise of the Landgraves of Thuringia was accompanied by further magnificent expansion. By 1230, Neuenburg was already around three times as large as Wartburg! The Romanesque double chapel built around 1170/75 is still an architectural gem today.
On behalf of Hermann I, Heinrich von Veldeke completed the Eneasroman around 1185, the first Middle High German knightly-courtly verse epic ever. Neuenburg experienced the end of its high medieval heyday under Landgrave Ludwig IV and his wife, Saint Elisabeth.

Confluence of the Saale and Unstrut Rivers

Highlight • River

A very beautiful piece of earth on the flower ground, where the Saale and the Unstrut flow together. The natural pool was still in use until the early 1990s, with the pool water being pumped from the Saale into the pool.

From here you cycle on the Saale cycle path either in the direction of Bad Kösen or in the direction of Naumburg and Schönburg.

Actually, the tour should go to cheeks to the sky disc. Since Sylvia got problems with her bike halfway (slipping rear wheel), which we couldn't solve at first and we had seen rail replacement buses in Nebra (the regional train only went to Karsdorf today, you have to know that of course) we decided to go back to Karsdorf.
Since …

We then continued along the Unstrut to Naumburg. Incidentally, you can also organize multi-day tours on Unstrut and Saale at the Nebra canoe rental (see photo), and I will realize that soon, arms and shoulders will then get something to do again, not just the legs 😉. After about 30 km we had to say goodbye to the Unstrut, at …

Today because it was overcast ☁️ I took the regional train 🚈 to Wangen to ride my bike 🚴‍♂️ comfortably back. Wow, the sun came out in the afternoon 🌞 and it really hit my head, it was like being in a saucepan 🌡.... the asphalt was boiling, but so was I...I would say almost cooked through.😏 🍗

June 8, 2026,Saaleradweg Tag 2b: Abstecher Unstrut Naumburg <-> Nebra 🚴‍♂️🚴‍♂️🌤️

The Unstrut cycle path is almost entirely asphalted, apart from a few cobblestone sections, and is laid out similarly beautifully to the Saale cycle path.
I found the section from Naumburg to Laucha the most beautiful. It begins with the confluence of the Saale and Unstrut rivers, where you cross by ferry. The ferryman is called with the so-called "Fähreisen" …
