The steep rise over hill and dale through several serpentines reveals a new great view on each loop. Unfortunately there is no break bank here, but the Hohe Kasten is not far away.

Hoher Kasten Summit

Highlight • Summit

Very nice view and easy to reach thanks to the cable car.
Accordingly, you are rarely alone here.

A nice walking trail. It goes over hill and dale here and the path is often exposed.
The landscape is simply breathtaking and fascinatingly beautiful.

There is no all-round view from the marked position! However, if you hike along the path, there are excellent views overall (somewhat north and south): of the Hoher Kasten massif in the north-east; down into the Rhine Valley in the southeast; to the southwest in the valley between the two mountain ranges of the Alpstein with the Sämtisersee and on these two mountain ranges - with good visibility up to the mighty Säntis in the center; to the north on the broad valley floor with Brülisau and Appenzell.

View of Sämtisersee

Highlight • Viewpoint

Sämtisersee, Alpstein region
The picturesque Sämtisersee is located above Brülisau in the municipality of Rüte in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden. The Appenzell mountain lake is located at the foot of the Hoher Kasten in the Alpstein region at an altitude of around 1200 meters above sea level. The Seealpsee and the Fälensee, the other two larger lakes in the Alpstein, are each about three kilometers (as the crow flies) to the southwest. The Sämtisersee is fed by various streams, especially the Sämtiserbach.

Lake Sämtiser

Highlight • Lake

Sämtisersee at 1200 meters
As with Fählensee, there is no outflow to be seen here. The water from both lakes flows underground and reappears in the Rhine Valley. Outflow or not, enjoy a refreshing swim!
The water level fluctuates greatly, which is why Sämtisersee almost dries out in very hot summers.

Plattenbödeli mountain inn since 1911 at 1284 m above sea level.
Unique landscape in the Alpstein.
1911 - Innkeeper Jos. Anton Dörig "Mattle" (great-grandfather of Platte Hans and grandfather of Meglisalp Mile) bought a piece of land at the exit of the Brüeltobel and built a small guesthouse, which he soon handed over to his daughter Franziska Inauen-Dörig.
1917 - Handed over to daughter Franziska Fritsche-Inauen.
1930 - Alfred Fritsche built the current inn.
1934 - Electric light was used for the first time on the Plattenbödeli, powered by a single-cylinder diesel engine and an Örlikon battery.
1958 - Son Hans and Alice Fritsche-Holderegger bought the business. To remedy the water shortage, a 1000m long pipe was laid from the Alp Rainhütte through the lake. The spring is 60m higher than the Plattenbödeli and thus the water flows into the reservoir with counter pressure. The diesel system was enlarged and a dishwasher and a washing machine were installed.
1964 - The mule track through the Brüeltobel is expanded as a road.
1971 - The kitchen is added, the toilet facilities are converted and the restaurant with a self-service buffet is renovated. The main entrance is moved to the sunny side and the terrace is extended. A separate sewage treatment plant is built and the diesel system is renewed.
2022 - Alois and Manuela Inauen Sager purchase the mountain inn.
