Brixen Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

Brixen Town Hall

For centuries, the building that now houses the town council was a simple burgher's house where flour and other provisions were sold. Contrary to what one might assume, the building does not date from the Late Middle Ages, but was merely modeled after them. When it became fashionable throughout Europe towards the end of the 19th century to restore architectural elements to their medieval form, Councillor Ferdinand von Kaltenegger had the recently acquired building raised by one story and furnished with medieval features (watchtower, crenellated roof, wainscoting, and beamed ceilings inside, etc.). The former general store had thus been transformed into the impressive "Tauernstein Castle."

When Kaltenegger died in 1911, the municipality acquired the building. The subsequent relocation of the town hall from the north side of the arcades to the south side, with a side facing the cathedral square, was also intended, in a sense, to signal a change in attitude towards the church: While the town council had previously been more active in the secular, northern part of the city, they now extended their influence more significantly to the southern, formerly church-dominated area.

Bressanone Cathedral (Duomo di Bressanone)

Highlight • Religious Site

Brixen Cathedral and the cloister
All roads lead to the cathedral square of Brixen, the heart of the city. The cathedral is one of the most important sacred buildings along the Alps and is one of the most famous sights in Brixen. Its origins go back to the 10th century AD. The last major renovation took place in the 18th century. The building was completed in the baroque style with a classical vestibule.
The cloister is part of the cathedral district and is vaulted with a Gothic cross vault. The frescoes date from the 14th and 15th centuries and document the development of art in the Middle Ages.
