St Mary the Virgin Church, Lawford

Highlight • Historical Site

St Mary’s is a pretty Grade I-listed church in peaceful surroundings on the outskirts of Lawford. It is constructed from flint, rubble, septaria, and brick, with limestone dressings and red tiled roof. The oldest part of the building is the nave, which dates to 1200 or earlier. The churchyard contains the graves of the war poet Robert Nichols and his father John Bowyer Buchanan Nichols, who was also a poet.

St Mary's Church, Dedham

Highlight • Religious Site

This church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin in 1492 when the present building was begun, is not the first church to have been built upon this site. There has been a church in Dedham since at least 1322, when services were held in a smaller church on the site of the present South Aisle Chapel. The archway to the present Vicar’s vestry is thought to have been the entrance to that church.

Dedham Lock

Highlight • River

Dedham Lock and its historic former mill were made famous by John Constable's stunning painting set here. His father owned and operated the mill, so Constable had an incredibly close connection to it.

The setting is just as lovely as the painting suggests, with clear water and lush vegetation surrounding it.

Flatford Granary

Highlight • Monument

The Flatford Granary stored grain until the 19th century when flour milling became profitable. Owned by Golding Constable, it passed to his son Abram and was eventually sold to William Bentall in 1846.

Willy Lott's Cottage

Highlight • Settlement

This Grade I-listed cottage was owned by Willy Lott, a farmer born in 1761. The cottage featured in a number of paintings by British Romantic painter, John Constable, but most notably, 'The Hay Wain'. The cottage — which is located in Flatford, in the heart of the beautiful Dedham Vale, an area the artist painted prolifically — was restored in 1921 following a resurgence of interest in Constable's work and is now owned by the National Trust.

View of The Hay Wain at Flatford

Highlight • Historical Site

This is the spot (more or less) of the view shown in John Constable’s The Hay Wain, now largely preserved by The National Trust.

Flatford Mill

Highlight • River

This wonderfully picturesque spot on the River Stour was immortalised by John Constable's famous 1817 painting 'Flatford Mill'. This was the largest of Constable's great exhibition pieces to be painted primarily outdoors, during the summers of 1816 and 1817. Today, it's still a lovely place to wander, right in the heart of the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
