Saint Peter's Cathedral

Highlight • Other

The "Saint-Pierre" cathedral in Condom was dedicated to Saint Peter. Simon, nicknamed Peter (Rock), was a fisherman on the Sea of Galilee when he - together with his brother Andrew - was called by Jesus Christ to be "fishers of men". According to Catholic understanding, he is the supreme apostle, and the two millennia-long line of popes - currently Francis - are his successor. On statues and paintings, Peter is almost always depicted with two keys in his hand; this attribute refers to the biblical saying in Matthew: “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Chapter 16, verse 19).
Peter and Paul are also known as the “Princes of the Apostles”; their common feast day in the saints’ calendar is June 29th.

Condom

Highlight • Settlement

Condom is a Gascon episcopal city, stronghold of the most famous of musketeers: d'Artagnan. The statue of the 4 musketeers by Dumas has stood in Saint Peter's Square since its inauguration in 2010. It is the work of Georgian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli. This town is crossed by the cycle route 82 known as the Baïse valley. The old center is remarkable. The city is also very lively and offers many activities to those who are just passing through, such as introductory workshops in animated cinema.

Smallest fortified medieval city in France. It is even said that Carcassonne was copied from Larressingle!

Larressingle Fortified Village

Highlight • Historical Site

If you are traveling on the GR65, you must make the small detour of about 2 km to visit Larressingle. The Gascons call this little place "Carcassonne du Gers". It is a fine example of the region's fortified villages. The place consists of several houses, the castle and the castle church. It is completely surrounded by an intact fortification wall and a moat.
Construction of Larrissingle began in 1286. It was there that the Abbots of Lectoure found a safe place. In the 16th century, however, the abbots got a new country seat. Larrissingle was meaningless after that and time still seems to have stood still. A beautiful, authentic example of the Middle Ages.

Pont d'Artigues

Highlight • Bridge

The Pont d'Artigues is part of the Camino de Santiago and the GR 65 long-distance hiking trail, which leads from Le Puy-en-Velay in Auvergne to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the Pyrenees and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The brick arch bridge, built in 1724, stands at a point that was probably already used as a river crossing by the Roman road Agen to Eauze and Aire-sur-l’Adour. The building from the 18th century was renovated in the 1950s.
The bridge is almost 30 meters long and almost three meters wide. It is asymmetrical and consists of a large main arch flanked by two small arches. On the east side there is also another large arch that is missing on the west side.
