Jost-Sigristen House, Ernen

Highlight • Historical Site

Jost-Sigristen-Haus, Ernen
Martin Jost, Meier (government governor) and banner lord of the Zenden Goms, built the house on the Unterer Hen gert in 1581. The squared timber block stands on a base with a cellar and hall floor. In 1701, the builder added a brick extension to the eastern eaves side of the house. In 1772 - during the Rococo period - the interior of the house was renovated. The furnishings with paneled rooms and coffered ceilings are largely still preserved. The builder at the time was Jakob Valentin Sigristen, the last governor of the old Republic of Valais before the French invasion. Since 1995, the first residential floor of the house has housed a museum that focuses on the living culture and everyday life of Governor Jakob Valentin Sigristen († 1808). The museum was set up by the foundation and the association for local history museums and cultural preservation in Ernen with the support of the municipality of Ernen.

Village Square Ernen

Highlight • Settlement

Ernen is always worth a visit. A beautiful little Valais village with old, narrow streets. Especially recommended during the music festivals in August. There are wonderful concerts in the small church.

Mühlebach

Highlight • Settlement

No other village in Gommern boasts a comparable number of old buildings to Mühlebach: nine houses date from the late Middle Ages, and eight date from the 16th century.

The cosy Café Hängebrigga owned by the family of Olympic snowboard champion Patrizia Kummer is an absolute insider tip: not only the cake tastes fantastic here.

Goms Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

This is a quite spectacular suspension bridge. It is made (like the Valais houses) of larch wood and crosses the young Rhone (or Rotten) at a height of 92 meters. It is only 140 centimeters wide, 280 meters long and thus one of the longest pedestrian suspension bridges in Switzerland.

The weather was just right for a detour to Ernen. Our goal was a well-preserved village center and a quick visit to the suspension bridge. Unfortunately, I'm not immune to heights, so crossing the bridge wasn't for me. But it's still possible. At 92 meters deep, it's impressive. Since the post buses only run irregularly, we decided to walk back …

A small tour, the highlight was the Goms suspension bridge, the beautiful village of Ernen with old Valais houses, I even discovered a gallows and an exhibition in the forest 🐾
