The Sakagori Fort was built in the 13th and 14th centuries; towers in the 17th century. It is located at the confluence of the Soeatisi with the Terek, thus strategically ideal.
We are here barely 10km from the border with both Russia and South Ossetia. Anyone walking past this point had better have their identity card with them, as border checks can be expected.

The destination of the hike is the ruins of the Zakagori fortress and leads past the Abano nunnery. The ruins mark the last Georgian border post before the Russian border, which is about 5 km away.
