Rodebach and Roode Beek flow together in the Natuur- und Landschaftspark and give it its name. Originally they flowed between Schinveld and Gangelt in a large wetland with swamps and shrubbery.
In the middle of the 20th century, it was drained and turned into narrow gullies to preserve land for agriculture and pump water from the mining tunnels.
With the project of the two frontier communities, the canalized brooks returned in 2003 a natural bed. The effects were not long in coming: a diverse flora and fauna resettled again and turned the face of the park back into a varied wetland.
