View as far as the Middle Rhine: nice resting point, but not secluded, as it is directly on the Ingelheim-Heidesheim cycle path above the sports field.

The Imperial Palace in Ingelheim is a remnant of a bygone era. It was built for Charlemagne between 780 and 800 AD and is said to have once been magnificent. Today, the excavated outlines of the palace are a reminder of its former splendor.

Imperial Palace in Ingelheim

Highlight • Historical Site

Charlemagne (748 - 814) chose Ingelheim as a base for his travels through his Frankish kingdom and had a representative palace built - that's what the seats of government were called at the time. In terms of importance, the imperial palace in Ingelheim is on a par with the palaces in Aachen and Nijmegen. World history was written in Ingelheim in the Middle Ages - with exclusive events such as coronations, imperial synods or abdications.
After Charlemagne, two handfuls of rulers used the Ingelheim Imperial Palace - it remained an important place of European politics and cultural history for over 300 years.

Ruins and restored remains, partly merged with residential buildings, reconstructions of the hall area, paved traces, information boards on the historical circular route that explain every relic that has survived or disappeared and thus make the past splendor understandable (guided tour recommended). In addition to the signage and accompanying booklet, there is the KAISERPFALZ APP, which is available free of charge in Google Play and in the AppStore (to be found under the keyword "Kaiserpfalz Ingelheim").

This archaeological presentation area is divided into two levels. On the lower level is what was once an underground pool of water
from the Carolingian period. On the intermediate level, which corresponds to the 8th century running level, a cut in the floor allows a view of
the exposed supply line of the basin.

The pool was incorrectly referred to as "Carlsbad" in the past. In fact, it was related to a seven-kilo
meter long long-distance water pipeline, which led underground from Heidesheim through the Wackernheimer Tal to the Kaiserpfalz. The canal was made of
stone walls and lined with waterproof mortar. The basin clarified the water brought in from the long-distance water pipe, which
accumulated here so that suspended particles could settle.
