Roman Watchtower Reconstruction on Schrenzer Hill

The wooden tower on the Schrenzer Berg near Butzbach is one of the oldest reconstruction attempts of a wooden watchtower, which was made on the Limes. In 1898, the site near the well-preserved pile ditch was examined by the Reichslimes Commission, which had two "inconspicuous" hills. Initially, the southern one of the two hills was investigated and a ring trench with a circular plateau of 8.4 m diameter in the middle could be detected. Traces of four post holes testified to a wooden tower that once must have stood here. The encircling ring ditch was interpreted as the location of a palisade. Today we know that it was a drainage ditch.
