Stone Arch Tunnel and Wooden Bridge in Hunsrück

Highlight • Bridge

A beautiful spot, but the driveway opposite causes problems for many biobikers.

From this rest area you have a great view of the Hubertus Viaduct. The structure was built in a curve over the Hubertus Gorge. The viaduct is 150 meters long, 50 meters high and has six openings. Maybe you'll see the Hunsrück Railway on its way between Emmelshausen and Boppard.

View of Kloster Bornhofen

Highlight • Viewpoint

Bornhofen Monastery is a Franciscan monastery with a pilgrimage church in Kamp-Bornhofen (Bornhofen district) on the Rhine in the diocese of Limburg. It lies below the steep slate rock with the enemy brothers Castle Sterrenberg and Castle Liebenstein on the right bank of the Rhine about 20 km south of Koblenz and is one of the oldest and most important pilgrimage sites in the Middle Rhine. Since 2002, the Bornhofen Monastery has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley it is a protected cultural asset under the Hague Convention.

Around 1400, Knight Johannes Brömser von Rüdesheim, the bailiff of Electoral Trier for the administration of Sterrenberg Castle, began building a church on the ruins of a previous building, which is believed to have been built during the armed conflict over the imperial pledge of the castle between the Archbishop of Trier, Balduin of Luxembourg, and the previous owner Count Diether V. of Katzenelnbogen had been destroyed; The winner of this dispute was Electoral Trier, which held the property until the end of the Old Empire in 1806. The coat of arms of the Rüdesheim Brömser family (silver and black with 6 lilies) can still be seen in the choir area.

Under Brömser's son Johann, the church was completed on the eve of the Assumption (August 14) 1435; this was previously documented by an inscription on the bell tower, which, however, was destroyed in a fire in 1949. A miraculous image of the Virgin Mary attracted more and more pilgrims and pilgrims over the course of time. Since the local pastors could no longer cope with the rush, the Archbishop of Trier, Johann Hugo von Orsbeck, called on the Capuchins from nearby St. Goarshausen-Wellmich to found a monastery. In 1680 the foundation stone was laid for the complex, which was completed in 1684.

This is actually Thurnberg Castle. It is located on the right bank of the Rhine. The "Burg Katz" by the Count of Katzenelnbogen is located above the river. He mockingly called her the "mouse".
During the season, dates for castle tours are offered by Loreley Touristik. The Rheinsteig also leads past it.
