Eriskay Causeway

Highlight • Structure

Eriskay Causeway was built in the early 2000's connecting the island of Eriskay to South Uist. It's about 2km long.
The causeway is used on the Hebridean Way cycle trail, it's fun to ride across unless the weather is bad as there isn't any shelter.
Keep an eye out for seals.

Barra Airport Beach Runway

Highlight • Beach

The most scenic airport you will ever see. Well worth going at the correct times to watch the planes land.

Sheabhal Climb from Castlebay

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

The Sheabhal climb from Castlebay on the Isle of Barra is short but brutally steep, averaging 10% with steep ramps peaking near 13-15%. The single-track road rises sharply from the coast, offering stunning views of the bay and Atlantic as you grind upwards. The surface is decent but exposed to wind and weather, so conditions can change quickly. The panoramic summit views make every effort worth it.

The main village on Barra island, Castlebay is a lovely place that gives a taste of Hebridean life. Here, you find a smattering of quaint shops and cafes, several grocery stores, a bank and post office.

The village overlooks Kisimul Castle, a stunning castle on a tiny island in the middle of the sea. In 2001, the chief of Clan MacNeil leased the castle to Historic Scotland for 1,000 years. The price? £1 and a bottle of whisky per year.

Blink and you will miss it as I cycled straight past but it’s in front of the Vartesay community hall!

Loch An Duin Climb from Northbay

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

The Loch An Duin climb from Northbay on the Isle of Barra is a remote, rolling ascent averaging 6%, with ramps nudging 12%. The single-track road rises steadily through moorland and lochside scenery, with sweeping views and barely another soul in sight. The climb feels exposed, especially in the wind, so pace yourself and stay relaxed on the pedals. It’s a quiet climb through wild and open island landscape.
