Highlight • Structure

Štrbské Pleso is a winter sports and spa resort in the High Tatras in Slovakia. Founded in 1872 as a hunting lodge owned by landowner Jozef Szentivány on the southern shore of the Tschirmer Lake, the settlement belonged to the town of Vysoké Tatry from 1999 to 2007 and to the municipality of Štrba in Okres Poprad (Prešovský kraj) since 3 May 2007. Štrbské Pleso is located directly on the homonymous Štrbské pleso.

From 1875 on the shores of the lake, the first tourist hostels and hotels were built, a year later, a road from the valley, which was built in 1921 to the road. In 1885, a connection to Starý Smokovec was expanded and the town of Štrbské Pleso was awarded the title of spa. In 1906 the hotels Hviezdoslav and Kriváň were created. With the 4.75 kilometer long rack railway from Štrba (meter gauge, steam locomotives, system Riggenbach, maximum gradient 15%), the place was 1896 to 1932 rail connection, then the old Zubačka (Slovak: ozubnicová železničná trať) was replaced by a bus. The narrow-gauge electric Tatrabahn from Poprad via Starý Smokovec had already begun operation in 1911. After the Second World War, some of the hotels were converted into sanatoria for asthma sufferers, which were later replaced by tourist facilities. In 1976, a modern spa Helios was built.

The place was expanded on the occasion of the Nordic World Ski Championships 1970. New hotels, a cable car and two ski jumps were created. In the following years, the region was further expanded with numerous lifts as a ski sport center. On the largely preserved route of the cog railway, which was removed in 1936, the new electric rack railway Štrba-Štrbské Pleso was built (system of Roll, meter gauge).

With 1346 m n.m. Štrbské Pleso is one of the highest spas in Central Europe. Respiratory diseases are mainly treated. The lake was nominated as one of the four natural wonders in Slovakia.

After the 1970 World Cup, Štrbské Pleso hosted the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 1990, 2000 and 2009 as well as the Winter Universiade in 1999 and 2015.
