Stuttgart Art Museum

Highlight • Monument

The Kunstmuseum Stuttgart was opened in 2005 in a spectacular new building on Schlossplatz in the heart of the city. Every year the widely visible glass cube attracts a wide audience in addition to its permanent collection with three to four large special exhibitions.

However, the true size of the Stuttgart Art Museum only becomes apparent when you enter the collection area: a disused tunnel system made it possible to expand the exhibition area to a total of 5,000 square meters in a discreet and sophisticated way. The highlights of the collection are presented here. This was founded in 1924 on the occasion of a donation from Count Silvio della Valle di Casanova and today comprises over 15,000 works of Swabian Impressionism, Classic Modern and contemporary art. Central works by artists such as Adolf Hölzel, Willi Baumeister, Fritz Winter or Dieter Roth make a visit to the art museum a lasting experience.

The Kunstmuseum Stuttgart is known for its significant inventory of works by the artist Otto Dix. His triptych »Großstadt« from 1927/28 and »Portrait of the Dancer Anita Berber« from 1925 are among the masterpieces of the 20th century.

Monument to Duke Christoph

Highlight • Monument

Duke Christoph von Württemberg (1515–1568) assumed a political leadership role among German Protestants during the Reformation. He finally dissolved Alpirsbach Monastery and other monasteries in Württemberg and gave them a new function as Protestant monastery schools.

Königsbau, Stuttgart

Highlight • Monument

The Königsbau Stuttgart was built in the mid-19th century in late-classicist style and forms the western boundary of Schlossplatz. Destroyed during the war, the former business building was rebuilt in 1958/59.

The impressive colonnade of 34 columns has a length of 135 meters and characterizes the entire building. Once upon a time there were magnificent Hoffe eggs - today, cafes and enjoyment invite you. And behind the Königsbau today lures the shopping center Königsbau Passagen Stuttgart with 25,000 square meters of retail space and restaurants.

Dandelion Fountain Königstraße

Highlight • Monument

The Australian fountain artist Robert Woodward designed the first dandelion fountain in 1959. Since 1961 it has stood as the El Alamein Fountain on King's Cross in Sydney. These dandelion fountains have spread to various European and American cities around the world, as well as to Damascus, Aleppo and Saratov on the Volga. In Germany you can find them in Stuttgart, Limburg an der Lahn, Bad Dürrheim and Dresden (there by Leoni Wirth).

A beautiful column and one of Stuttgart's lesser-known landmarks. Unfortunately, in the evenings, there are too many drug dealers on the Schlossplatz, and the police have to clean it up in the meantime... Nevertheless, the column is worth a closer look across from the palace. Events are often held here, and the two neighboring fountains provide a bit of shade and, if needed, a refreshing dip.

Music Pavilion at Schlossplatz

Highlight • Monument

The pavilion is located in the middle of Königstrasse, the shopping street in Stuttgart. Opposite the new castle and right next to it the old castle. In summer there are also many street musicians out and about. The most beautiful place in Stuttgart.

Schlossplatz, Stuttgart

Highlight • Historical Site

A beautiful spot in the heart of Stuttgart – Schlossplatz, with its impressive New Palace, is a true highlight of the city. The palace itself is magnificently designed, with classical elegance and great attention to detail. Here, you can feel Stuttgart's history and character.

What makes this place special, however, is not just the architecture, but the atmosphere surrounding it: The green spaces surrounding the palace are used by locals and tourists alike – people sit on the lawns, chat, relax, and enjoy the day. There is a harmonious, open atmosphere that demonstrates how vibrant and yet peaceful this city can be.

The square is not only a historical landmark, but also a meeting place – for young and old, for those seeking peace and quiet, or for those simply wanting to enjoy city life.

Since the train was actually on time, I got off at the main train station and combined an appointment with the radiologist with a short walk through Stuttgart.
