The present-day St. Michael's Church was built towards the end of the 15th century on the site of a smaller, likely Romanesque, predecessor. Construction began in 1487, but the official laying of the foundation stone did not take place until the following year, if the dating of the foundation stone discovered during renovations in 1964 is to be believed. The reasons for this unusual delay are no longer known. However, we do know the master builder who left his mark on a keystone of the chancel vault: Peter von Koblenz, a stonemason and architect from Werkhausen near Koblenz, to whom Württemberg owes many masterpieces of late Gothic architecture, such as the monastery church in Blaubeuren, St. Amandus Church in Urach, and St. Peter's Church in Weilheim unter Teck.

Characteristic features of the exterior of St. Michael's Church in Eltingen are the pointed arch windows richly decorated with tracery and the buttresses on the chancel and nave. The nave is relatively squat compared to other village churches – likely a concession to the local terrain. Most of the furnishings of the late Gothic church, such as the altars, were lost in the wake of the Reformation. The crucifix and three wooden choir stall groups, whose flat carvings are reminiscent of those in Leonberg and Dagersheim, have survived.

In the 1960s, the Black Eagle was essentially given its current shape through interior renovations and a renovation of its exterior. In this context, the half-timbering, which had been hidden under plaster for a long time, has also been exposed. The Black Eagle is widely known as the meeting place of the Leonberg state parliament in 1457. This year, the Württemberg states, including the cities, were at the event for the first time involved in political decision-making. However, it is doubtful whether this state parliament, the first in the county of Württemberg-Urach, met in the Black Eagle. On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the state parliament, a cabinet meeting of the Baden-Württemberg state government took place in the Black Eagle on November 26, 1957. In order to keep the memory of the “root of democracy” alive, citizens held a memorial ceremony in the Black Eagle every November from 1958 onwards. This tradition was maintained until the 1970s.
