July 5, 2025,Hopwas Wood Snake Pit
Stopped off at the “Snake Pit” in Hopwas—no snakes in sight! Some call it the Elephant Grave, but to me, it looked more like an old quarry. Apparently, it’s also where the witches were arrested years ago. Strange name, eerie history—interesting stop.
The path can get muddy in places, but it's still passable. I had heard stories about The Wood House and its demolition, so I was hoping to find some remnants. However, only the original floors and what looks like a well remain. You can still see how the grounds would have once looked quite nice. There was no signage marking …
I was hoping to find and photograph the old shelters in the middle of the woods. We used to play here as children and the rumour was that they were called the hand grenade shelters. I missed the turning on this occasion and didn't find them.
