Schiller town Marbach on the Neckar

When Schiller died in Weimar on May 9, 1805, the house where he was born had been temporarily forgotten. But just a few years later, with the poet's growing fame, it became a popular pilgrimage destination. The Marbach Schiller Association acquired the house and made it publicly accessible as a collection and memorial site from the Schiller anniversary in 1859.
Since then, the house has been completely redesigned several times. This was also the case on the occasion of Schiller Year 2009, for which the memorial received a completely redesigned permanent exhibition. It was opened on February 2, 2009 by the then Prime Minister Günther Oettinger.

Schiller's Birthplace

In this small, rather inconspicuous half-timbered building in Marbach am Neckar, Friedrich Schiller was born in 1759. Although Schiller moved with his parents to Lorch and Ludwigsburg after only a few years, Marbach developed into a place of reverence for the poet after Schiller's death. Based on a drawing, the birthplace was even identified in 1812 and a memorial plaque was attached, which you can still admire today.

Schiller's birthplace today houses a small permanent exhibition where you can learn something about Schiller's childhood years and also about the living conditions in Marbach at that time. If you want to learn even more about Schiller, you should also visit the museum on Schillerhöhe.

April to October daily 9 am to 5 pm
November to March daily 10 am to 4 pm
