Weinsteg Calw

Highlight • Bridge

Beautiful small decorated mostly with flower boxes jetty. The name of the jetty is based on the earlier transport of wine between the wine cellars on the right side of the Nagold and the wine shops on the left bank of the river.

Footbridge over the Nagold

Highlight • Bridge

Small concrete bridge over the Nagold with a good view of the river. You should be careful when crossing the B463 as it is a somewhat confusing area in the bends.

The stone bridge and the Gothic chapel were built around 1400. The chapel was dedicated to St. Nicholas, the patron saint against high and stormy water. In the course of the Reformation in the 16th century, the two former figures were probably removed from the niches to the left and right of the chapel portal. When the chapel was renovated in 1926, the figures of a cloth merchant and a raftsman were placed in the niches. They symbolize the former economic pillars of the city, the cloth and tool making and the trade in their products as well as rafting, combined with the timber trade. Due to these two branches of industry, Calw was one of the economically strongest cities in Württemberg for a long time. The window panes of the chapel show the coats of arms of the Calw families. They were also re-used during the renovation in 1926.

Nikolausbrücke and Nikolauskapelle are Calw's landmarks. Cars drove on the Nikolausbrücke until the 1970s. When traffic became too heavy and people feared for the old building, a new connection was created over the Nagold, the Marktbrücke. This relieved the Nikolaus Bridge. Until 100 years ago, you could watch the raftsmen at their hard and exhausting work from the bridge: they maneuvered rafts of ten to 15 gstors (one gstor is made up of six to eight trunks) through this bottleneck, i.e. rafts of around 100 trunks and a length of 150 to 200 meters.

Calw Market Square

Highlight • Historical Site

It's really nice to see all the proud half-timbered houses lined up here around the market square. In summer you can sit outside at one of the restaurants.
