Johann Baptist Modler was the fourth and youngest child of the respected cloth-making family of Johann Adam Modler and his wife Regina from Hohenfels in Upper Palatinate and was baptized on May 30, 1697 in the parish church there. In 1736, Modler left Obernberg and moved with his family to Kößlarn, where his wife gave birth to eight more children.

Because Modler could not support a family with his art alone, even in Kößlarn, his wife ran a grocery store on the side. That is why he is often referred to as "Stukhadorer and Kramer".
