Obermühl Parish Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The history of the very modern (slightly different) church according to Wikipedia... very interesting:

As early as 1770 to 1772 a church was built in Obermühl and dedicated to the Nativity of Mary. At that time it was a branch church of the parish church in Kirchberg ob der Donau. In 1933 the parish office in Obermühl was founded and the church was renovated.

Due to the construction of the Aschach power plant on the Danube, whose backwater reaches as far as Obermühl, the old town was relocated. The old church was demolished and today's modern-style church was erected on a higher site in 1964 as a replacement according to plans by the Viennese architect Heinz Scheide. The new church was consecrated on September 20, 1964. The rococo altar of the old church was set up in the parish church of Michaelnbach.

In 2007, the church was remodeled according to plans by the architects Josef Schütz and Rainer Habringer and an artistic redesign by Gabriele and Alois Hain from Haslach an der Mühl.

dr Rudolf Kirchschläger was born in 1915 in Grafenau, municipality of Niederkappel and was baptized a few days later in the Niederkappel parish church. Because of this, Dr. Kirchschläger repeatedly visited our place with his family in his later years. He celebrated his 70th and 80th baptismal anniversaries in Mühlviertler Dom. On March 30, 2000 Dr. Kirchschlager in Vienna. To commemorate him, a plaque was placed in the parish church (donated by Mr.OSR Konrad Jäger) and a memorial stone was erected on the site of his birthplace in Grafenau 21. There is also a Kirchschläger-Steig, which leads from the former parents' house on the small Mühl to the Mühlviertler Dom.

The president's chair is an idiosyncratic seat made of oak, which towers high above the Danube directly on the "Dr.Kirchschläger-Steig" themed trail and provides wonderful insights into the Danube valley.

The Gothic church from 1404-1411 finally became too small in the 19th century. The call for a new church to be built grew louder and louder. The well-known and probably most important Bishop of Linz, Rudigier, suggested setting up a fund to enlarge the church, and the village judge and local poet Ignaz Donabaur gave the first donation in 1858.

The reconstruction of the church took place in the years 1890-1895. The master builder Raimund Jeblinger from Linz drew up the plans for the "Mühlviertler Dom". The church was built at the time with great sacrifices by the parish population. The parish and church patron is St. Andrew the Apostle. The church itself was inaugurated in 1895, but the tower was not completed until 1907 and the organ was purchased in 1912. (Source: Tourism Upper Austria)
