Parsonage Down

Highlight • Forest

High above the River Barle, Parsonage Down offers lovely views of the surrounding landscapes. The Exe Valley Way crosses the Down and you'll find yourself flanked by sheep fields and the sounds of bleating. To the west lies the open moorland at Old Barrow Down and to the east is the River Barle, cloaked in woodland.

Tarr Steps clapper bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Tarr Steps is the longest clapper bridge (a bridge made of unmortared stone slabs) in Britain. The Grade I-listed, 17-span bridge was first mentioned in Tudor times but is probably medieval in origin.

Tarr Steps riverside walk

Highlight • Forest

The well-marked loop trail along the river is varied but not too demanding and is 1.75 miles long (from Tarr Steps). Small children are better off in the back carrier, older ones will have a lot of fun!

Coin Tree in Exmoor National Park

Highlight • Structure

Quite a strange custom. A story I was once told: if you want to get rid of an illness, you symbolically give it to a dead tree with a coin.
It doesn't matter to the tree (it's already dead)
But if someone else pulls out a coin and pockets it, the tree will pass this disease back to the "puller."
Nasty, right? 🤷

Meadow in Exmoor National Park

Highlight • Natural

Every now and then the path forks here, the upper one is easier to walk, the lower one along the bank is more interesting - and sometimes you get wet feet 😁

Withypool Stone Bridge

Highlight • Settlement

Withypool is a quiet village in the Barle valley with a distinct upland character. Along the banks of the River Barle grow the willow trees that give Withypool its name. The village is home to a characteristic six-arch stone bridge, which was built roughly 100 years ago to replace an old packhorse bridge up river.
