Zator Castle

Highlight • Castle

The history of Zator Castle dates back to the mid-15th century, when the Duchy of Zator was established and construction began on its seat. In later years, the building was rebuilt numerous times, including in the neo-Gothic style in the 19th century. It was destroyed (e.g., during the Swedish Deluge) and changed owners, from the Piast and Potocki dynasty to the Institute of Zootechnics. After wartime destruction and nationalization, the castle underwent renovations, and currently, revitalization work is underway to restore it to its new function.
The Original Castle and the Development of the Duchy
Construction of the Castle (circa 1455): Construction began around 1455, when the Duchy of Zator was established following the division of the Duchy of Oświęcim. Wenceslaus became the first duke, obliging his subjects to work on the construction of the residence.
Defensive Character: The original castle had defensive features and served as the seat of the Piast Dukes of Zator. Incorporation into Poland (1564): The Duchy of Zator, along with the fortress, was incorporated into the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland. At that time, the castle belonged to the Dunin and Potocki families, among others.

Tower over the western span of the northern aisle. Next to the church, there is the tomb of princess Apolonia Poniatowska, the owner of the Zator estate in the 18th / 19th century.
In the crypt under the church lie the patrons of the temple in Zator, among others Anna Potocka (1779–1867) and her husband, General Stanisław Dunin-Wąsowicz, adjutant of Napoleon I, Maurycy Potocki and Ludwik Potock.

Oświęcim Castle

Highlight • Castle

Castle in Oświęcim - a building erected in the Middle Ages on the top of a hill, on the right bank of the Soła river in Oświęcim.
The castle consists of an early gothic bergfried tower built at the end of the 13th century and a two-storey, basement building erected on a rectangular plan (old castle wing from the beginning of the 16th century) and a link from 1929–1931 built on the site of older buildings. A significant part of the fortifications was taken by the river - which changed its course for centuries.
On the castle hill there are remains of defensive walls and bastions. The royal castle was located in the second half of the 16th century in the Silesian poviat of the Kraków voivodeship. There are two tunnels under the castle: the older one (built before 1914) and the other one drilled by the Germans (1940–1944). This tunnel served as an air-raid shelter.
The first mentions of the Oświęcim castellany come from the period when it was incorporated into the Duchy of Opole (1177–1179). The reconstruction and fortification of the castle are attributed to the son of Mieszko Plątonogi, Prince Kazimierz. This is evidenced by archaeological discoveries near the tower confirming the existence of a brick structure on the castle hill in the first half of the 13th century.
