Kellergstetten Poysdorf

Highlight • Settlement

The Kellergasse became known through the annual district wine festival. The "Gstetten" has more the character of a basement quarter than a cellar lane and also offers space for stage events due to its space-like shape.

Radyweg Cellar Lane

Highlight • Historical Site

The Radyweg is the longest cellar lane in Poysdorf - a jewel in the landscape. Overgrown by acacias, the Radyweg with its around 90 cellars is a classic hollow path cellar alley. Far from stress and hectic, time seems to stand still in the middle of the press houses - the perfect place to let your thoughts run free. For all those who would like to experience more, there is a cellar lane tour.

Vineyards near Poysdorf

Highlight • Natural

Viticulture has a long tradition in this region: vines were already grown here 3,000 years ago. You should have experienced the unique atmosphere that a Heuriger exudes in the Weinviertel. If you want to enjoy the Weinviertel wine and regional delicacies, you should definitely pay a visit to one of the typical Heurigen businesses.

With a good glass of wine, typical regional dishes are served at the Heuriger - local sausages and cheeses, ham, bacon, cold meat such as smoked meat, sausage roasts or blunz’n, spreads of all kinds and much more. A very well-known Heuriger specialty is the so-called Brettljausen. Some wine taverns with a corresponding license also serve warm dishes, with shredded dumplings, meat racks and roast pork on the table.

Castle ruins Falkenstein
The romantic castle ruins tower proudly and powerfully over the wine village.
The history of Falkenstein Castle is as old as the settlement of the Weinviertel under Emperor Heinrich III in the middle of the 11th century. As a border fortress to the north, it once protected the country from incursions from Bohemia and Hungary. The first Lords of Falkenstein were enfeoffed by the Babenbergs. For centuries, Falkenstein Castle was a feudal and pledged dominion of the sovereigns until it became privately owned in 1571. In 1645 the castle was conquered by the Swedes, but not destroyed. Decay only started at the end of the 17th century. a.
Under the current owner Georg Thurn-Vrints, the castle ruins were reopened to visitors and a conservation association was founded.
The ruins of Falkenstein Castle are under monument protection, occasionally archaeological excavations are carried out under the direction of the Federal Monuments Office. In summer, the large tournament courtyard becomes an atmospheric setting for various festivals and events.
During the guided tour, the old walls reveal their secrets. You will learn interesting facts about the building history of the castle and its inhabitants, you see
a natural cave in the limestone and an intact vault from the
13th century, where a medieval panel and a small museum with finds illustrate medieval life.
